Numeracy at WHPS
Overview
The teaching and learning of Mathematics at Wheelers Hill Primary School provides students with a solid foundation of mathematical skills and strategies that they will utilise in their study, work and daily life. Planning of lessons is aligned with the Victorian Curriculum which is organised by the three strands of Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. The teaching of the Mathematics curriculum focuses on developing mathematical understanding, fluency, reasoning and problem-solving proficiencies.
Our Structure
Students participate in engaging Mathematics lessons every day that are based on the students point of need and that cater for the range of abilities in the classroom. Lessons involve a range of learning activities that are designed to develop a deep understanding of specific mathematical concepts and also to support positive and productive learning habits. These may include explicit teaching, using hands-on materials, practising a skill, games, investigations and solving open-ended problems while working as a whole class, in groups or individually. Mathematics discussion and the use of specific mathematical language is encouraged so that students can articulate their thinking and understanding. At WHPS, students utilise a range of online learning tools and programs to support their learning in Mathematics. These include Mathseeds, Mathletics and Mangahigh.
Enrichment Opportunities
All students at WHPS may choose to participate in the Maths Talent Quest, ICAS and the Australian Maths Competition. Selected students also have the opportunity to be involved in Maths Olympiad and the extension group - Maths Investigators.
