Library
At Wheelers Hill Primary School students in all classes take part in weekly Library lessons in our open and inviting Library space.
We aim to deliver an engaging and interesting Library program, which focuses on building students’ understanding of and connection to literature, whilst providing opportunity for them to experience the joy of reading and the excitement of discovering works of imagination and knowledge.
Library lessons expose students to a wide range of quality literature, including picture books, fiction, non-fiction and titles nominated for the Children’s Book Council of Australia Awards. Students revel in sharing their knowledge of books and contributing their ideas through book discussions and recommendations. They learn through independent and collaborative learning opportunities that encourage critical and creative thinking.
WHPS Library lessons foster and promote:
reading for enjoyment
improved literacy, vocabulary and comprehension
developing empathy and understanding
an appreciation of literature
the development of lifelong readers
the ability to make meaningful connections

learning of and for the world
Students are taught skills to select appropriate texts for their enjoyment, learning and informational purposes. Focuses on genres, authors and illustrators assist students to develop understanding of their own reader preferences and identity.
